The Visionary Behind The Navigatio
If you’ve ever dreamt of exploring Japan but felt overwhelmed by where to start, Nele van Hout has you covered. As the founder of The Navigatio, a dedicated travel platform for all things Japan, she’s built an online empire helping millions of travellers create their perfect itineraries.
What started as a personal blog back in 2017 has grown into a thriving business, with over 3 million readers last year alone.
“We just hit 500,000 members in our Facebook group”
Nele shares, “which is mind-blowing when you think about it in terms of stadiums full of people.” That level of engagement is no accident – it’s a testament to her deep understanding of digital marketing, SEO, and community building.
From Creative Writing to Travel Blogging
Originally from the Netherlands, Nele moved to the UK nearly a decade ago to study creative writing. “I was the only foreigner in my class and felt I needed something extra to stand out,” she explains. So, she launched a blog—initially covering lifestyle and travel—which quickly became a crash course in SEO, content creation, and digital marketing.
Over time, her love for Japan took centre stage. “I thought, ‘I just want to do travel content. Actually, I really love Japan—I’m just going to focus on that.’” The niche was relatively untapped at the time, allowing The Navigatio to carve out a unique space in the industry.
Building a Business That Feels Authentic
Unlike many travel influencers who rely heavily on sponsorships, Nele has structured her business to maintain complete creative control. “Most of our revenue comes from affiliate marketing and on-site ads,” she explains. “I recommend hotels and tours I’ve personally used, and I earn a commission when people book through my site. That way, I can remain unbiased—I don’t want to promote something I don’t genuinely love.”
This approach has built immense trust within her community, particularly on Facebook, where members seek her direct recommendations rather than searching on their own. “A lot of our audience prefers to be told, ‘Here’s what you should do,’ rather than figuring it out themselves,” she says.
The Challenges of Scaling a Passion Project
Running a business that started as a passion project comes with its own hurdles. “Delegation has been tough,” Nele admits.
“It’s my baby, and finding the right people to trust has been a challenge”
While she’s successfully brought in team members—including a writer in Tokyo and a community manager for the Facebook group—expanding further is a priority.
“I need to hire an editor,” she says. “The last two months have just been updating old content, and I’ve got so many bigger ideas, but not enough time.” Beyond growing her team, she’s focused on launching digital products and maximising her email list of 40,000+ subscribers—an untapped goldmine for future business growth.
Travel, Influence, and Making an Impact
One of Nele’s proudest achievements is spending five months in Japan last year—completely funded by The Navigatio. “We worked with local tourism boards to promote lesser-known areas,” she explains. “Tokyo and Kyoto don’t need more tourists, but there are so many beautiful, accessible places that people just don’t know about.”
Her work directly influences travellers’ choices, a responsibility she takes seriously. “For most people, this is their once-in-a-lifetime trip. I want to make sure they have the best experience possible.”
What’s Next for The Navigatio?
Looking ahead, Nele sees enormous potential for expansion. “We’re launching a YouTube channel this year, working on digital products, and exploring the idea of a travel agency model in the future,” she shares. “There’s so much opportunity—it’s just about managing time and resources.”
How She Can Help (and Where She Needs Support)
Nele’s expertise in SEO, community building, and digital marketing makes her an invaluable resource for fellow entrepreneurs. “I’m happy to help anyone looking to grow their online presence,” she offers.
In return, she’s seeking guidance on hiring and delegation. “Letting go is hard,” she admits. “I know I need to trust other people, but finding the right hires is daunting.” With so many experienced founders at the coworking space, she’s hoping for insights on making that leap.
Life Beyond Work
Though she loves what she does, Nele is making a conscious effort to create space for hobbies outside of work. “I do a lot of yoga, go to the gym, and lately I’ve been getting into photography and artsy projects,” she says. “Just trying to step away from the computer more.”
Best Advice She’s Ever Received
“The best advice? Just quit all the other distractions and go all in,” she says. For years, she juggled freelancing alongside The Navigatio, worried that taking the leap would be too risky. “Everyone told me, ‘You’ll triple your income if you just commit to your business.’ And I thought, ‘Yeah, right.’ But then I did it, and… well, they were right.”
